There are several key agencies that support refugees and asylum seekers who wish to work in the education system. This support is usually funded via short term project funding and therefore may not be running throughout the year. Please contact the full range of agencies in order to get a full picture of what support is currently in place. Also contact your Local Council to see about any other local support.
Refugee into Teaching (RiT) |
Refugees into Teaching supports refugee teachers to return to teaching in England, and gives those with an interest in teaching more information and guidance. The final aim is to get teachers qualified up to QTS, mainly through employment based teacher training routes, particularly in Training and Development Agency for School's priority subjects. The priority subjects for 2008/09 are:
- Mathematics
- Science (including Applied Science)
- Modern Languages
- ICT (including Applied ICT)
- Music
- Religious Education
- Design and Technology
- Engineering
- Manufacturing
The project supports teachers at all stages, from having their qualifications assessed by UK NARIC, helping with ESOL needs and finding short term work placements, to accessing employment based training and working with a school to gain QTS. The project is specifically working in partnership with teacher training providers in the West London and West Midlands area.

CARA: Council for Assisting Refugee Academics,
London Southbank University |
CARA's core work revolves around twice yearly refugee-academic grant giving rounds (February and August) and a higher-education information signposting service. These two activities underpin CARA's primary objective to support refugee academics in their effort to rebuild shattered academic and/or professional careers within the UK and ensure that their specialist knowledge and abilities continue to benefit mankind.
CARA also facilitates and guides the work of the CARA/SAR UK Universities Network, established in 2005 to assist academics at risk and defend and promote academic freedom and university values worldwide
