What is Further Education?

Further education is the education and training available past 16 years (the school leaving age) but below degree level. Further education is open to people over 16 years. Some students will be aged between 16 and 18 years but most will be older than this. Some further education colleges are now providing separate courses for 14-16 years olds. The aim of further education is to train people for work or future studies. It is for adult learners of all ages, backgrounds and interests. This includes:
  • People who want to improve their basic skills (such as literacy and numeracy)
  • People who want to learn a new subject or skill
  • People who want to re-direct their careers
  • People who are working but want to continue with education and training

Further Education offers a range of  qualifications and non qualification courses including GNVQs, NVQ’s, City & Guilds, professional body exams, GCSE’O’ levels and GCE ‘A’ levels and non-examination courses for professional or personal development.  Some higher education courses also take place in further education colleges. Further Education is part of the Lifelong Learning Sector. Link
