Teaching Support roles in Schools

In addition to teachers there are a range of other support roles in school that do not require gaining QTS. Some focus on the particular needs of pupils such as language support or help with a particular subject. The recruitment and training of support staff is done at local level – by Local Education Authorities and individual schools – and not directly by the DCSF.

Jobs in teaching support

Some qualified teachers also provide support roles in school.  These include:

  • EMA(S/G) Co-ordinator – Ethnic Minority Achievement (Service/ Grant) Responsible for co-ordinating measures aimed at improving the educational attainment of ethnic minority pupils.
  • SEN Co-ordinator – Special Educational Needs
Responsible for co-ordinating measures aimed at supporting pupils with special educational needs. SEN pupils are those with 'learning difficulties or disabilities which make it harder for them to learn or access education than most other children of the same age.'
  • EAL Teacher – English as an Additional Language
Provides English language lessons and support to pupils with English as an additional language.
