Professional Training

If you feel you have enough information about the education system in the UK and want to study further to re-qualify or gain a professional qualification there are a wide range of courses available. This section looks at the qualifications you need to work in the various educational sectors.

Working with children under 5 is known as Early Years education and there are various roles and courses in this field.
To work as a teacher in schools with children between the ages of 5 and 18 you will need to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). There are a number of ways you can achieve this and choosing the right one is an important decision.
Alongside teachers there are various Support Roles in Schools that do not require QTS but can be a useful first step for working in the UK education system.
Further Education (FE) has a range of opportunities for teaching adults and young people aged 16 and over. Qualifications have recently been introduced that new FE teachers need to gain before they can start teaching.
There are no formal qualifications for teaching in Higher Education (HE) but you will need to have relevant experience to gain employment. Some universities have introduced training courses for new and existing teaching staff.
Most courses will be fee paying and you will need to apply for financial support to help you with these costs. Look at Fees and Funding in FE and Fees and Funding in HE for the relevant information.
