GCSEs

Before you start on an in Initial Teacher Training programme you need to achieve some basic qualifications. The GCSE (General Certificate in Secondary Education) is the main qualification for this purpose. To enter a programme you need the following:

A GCSE (or recognised equivalent) in English Grade C or above
A GCSE (or recognised equivalent) in mathematics Grade C or above
A GCSE (or recognised equivalent) in a science subject if you want to teach primary or key stages 2/3 Grade C or above

Special tests

If you cannot satisfy one of the GCSE requirements, ITT providers may offer special equivalence tests as evidence that you have reached the appropriate standard. These are only likely to be offered when the provider is satisfied that you are otherwise acceptable as a candidate. Not all providers offer such tests and you should ask the provider(s) of your choice for further information.

Access courses

ITT access courses usually enable you to attain the appropriate level in English, mathematics and science. For more information on access courses, visit the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS) website . You should check with your nearest access course provider whether their courses cover ITT entry requirements, and whether these are
acceptable to your chosen ITT provider(s).
